Sons of Fire are honoured to announce Shahina Waseem the ‘UK Chilli Queen’ as an honorary member for life.
Best known for her love of the three C’s: Cats, Chillies, and Cooking,
Shahina, dubbed the “UK Chilli Queen”, who is currently unbeaten in over 75 chilli eating competitions, says in her experience “the pain doesn’t last”. As our own Master of Ceremonies, Jif The Fireman often says “The pain is temporary, glory is forever”. Cap cramps not so temporary 😀
“For me personally, things are very much in the moment. So while I am eating it, I am suffering and this is after an hour and a half of ‘burn time’,” she said reflecting on Chilli Competitions.
“You start from mild to the hottest chillies, you go through 13 or 14 rounds, and then you end up with the Carolina reaper and then it does get to you.”
“For me the pain would last an hour or two hours max. I have heard of people suffering afterwards – for me it’s not so bad afterwards but during the competition I feel like I’m dying.”
It all started by accident a few years ago! Shahina entered a Chili-Eating Challenge in Kingston-Upon-Thames, she won it, and has had many victories since then. She loves hot food and enjoys the delectable piquancy that a chilli adds to any dish…but no way does she have any special superhuman powers or high tolerance to pain! The chilies wound her just like they do most people. The nerves set in days in advance and she dreads each and every competition but she just can’t give up when it comes to a chilli challenge!
Shahina is very encouraging and supportive and well respected by everyone in the Global Chilli Community, her place in Sons of Fire GCC was always reserved. Shahina’s commitment to doing better and being better is evident in all of her actions and that is why we voted unanimously to offer Shahina a lifetime membership. Shahina was very involved and supportive of The Sons of Fire Virtual Chilli Festival the weekend of November 21 & 22nd, 2020. Here is a clip of her thanking us for hosting the event.
